Diagnostic imaging of medullary thyroid cancer Diagnostyka obrazowa raka rdzeniastego tarczycy

چکیده
Medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) is an uncommon malignancy with a high tendency to metastasize both to lymph nodes and distant localizations. In recurrent disease the most important prognostic factors are the early diagnosis, localization of the recurrent lesions and adequate patient selection for further treatment. An important role in monitoring of patients with medullary thyroid cancer plays periodical measurement of calcitonin concentration, which allows to detect the recurrence early. There is no single universal diagnostic method to localize all medullary thyroid cancer recurrence lesions, however, the development of positron emission tomography (PET) methods observed in recent years led to an important progress in this field. Conventional diagnostic methods (ultasonography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance) currently play the basic role in the diagnosis of the medullary thyroid carcinoma. In this article we also described nuclear medicine imaging, both convencional scintigraphy and positron emission tomography methods, used in diagnosing of this neoplasm. Particular attention was paid to the use of each method depending on the clinical situation and the suspected location of tumor foci.

Approximately 5% of differentiated thyroid cancers are hereditary. Hereditary non-medullary thyroid cancer may occur as a minor component of familial cancer syndromes (e.g. familial adenomatous polyposis) or as a primary feature (familial non-medullary thyroid cancer [FNMTC]). Among FNMTC, PTC is the most common. Although a hereditary predisposition to non-medullary thyroid cancer is well estab...
متن کامل99mTc-DMSA (V) in detection of metastases of medullary thyroid carcinoma
Introduction: Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) is a rare thyroid cancer secreting calcitonin (CT) which is the most sensitive and specific tumor marker for MTC. This type of thyroid cancer is able to metastasize to different body areas including regional lymph nodes, lungs, liver and bone. The aim of this study was to assess the sensitivity and specificity of [99mTc-DMSA (V)] whole body ...

Twenty-one patients with medullary thyroid carcinoma were studied prospectively with Tc-99m (V) DMSA after surgery. Pentavalent DMSA scintigram demonstrated abnormal uptake in 13 and equivocal uptake in 6 patients. Finally, seven patients with surgical or other imaging documentation were selected for this paper. Most of these patients were asymptomatic. Six patients had hypercalcitonemia ...
متن کاملMedullary Thyroid Cancer: A Review
Thyroid cancer is a malignancy of the thyroid parenchymal cells. There are four main types of thyroid cancer: papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), follicular thyroid cancer (FTC), anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC), and Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). Medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) is a rare neuroendocrine tumor of the thyroid gland derived from parafollicular C-cells that produce calcitonin (CT...
متن کاملGenetic and Epigenetic of Medullary Thyroid Cancer
Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) is an infrequent calcitonin-producing neuroendocrine tumor that initiates from the parafollicular C cells of the thyroid gland. Several genetic and epigenetic alterations are collaterally responsible for medullary thyroid carcinogenesis. In this review article, we shed light on all the genetic and epigenetic hallmarks of MTC. From the genetic perspective, RET, ...
